"Jawaharlal Nehru" (1889 – 1964) Indian Prime Minister 1947 – 1964

Jawaharlal Nehru was an Indian politician who served as the first Prime Minister of India from 1947 until his death in 1964. He was born on November 14, 1889 in Allahabad, India, and was the son of Motilal Nehru, a prominent lawyer and independence activist, and Swarup Rani, a devout Hindu. He was educated at Harrow and Trinity College, Cambridge, and after returning to India, he joined the Indian National Congress, a political party that advocated for Indian independence from British rule. Nehru quickly rose through the ranks of the party, becoming a leader in the struggle for Indian independence.

In 1929, Nehru became the Congress president and led its civil disobedience campaign. In 1942, he was arrested by the British for his participation in the Quit India Movement and spent two years in prison. After his release, he returned to the Congress and led its efforts to achieve independence. On August 15, 1947, India officially became an independent nation, and Nehru was sworn in as its first Prime Minister. As Prime Minister, Nehru pursued a policy of non-alignment and remained a strong advocate for peace and disarmament. He also championed social and economic reforms, such as land redistribution, nationalization of industries, and the expansion of public education. Nehru also sought to build a strong, united India by promoting national integration, strengthening the federal structure, and promoting the adoption of Hindi as the national language. In foreign relations, Nehru advocated for strong ties with the Soviet Union, and sought to ensure India's security by establishing close ties with other non-aligned countries. He also sought to improve India's relations with its neighbors, and was instrumental in establishing the Non-Aligned Movement in 1955. Nehru was an important figure in the development of India, and his legacy continues to influence his country today. His commitment to peace and social justice, as well as his vision for a strong, united India, have inspired generations of Indians. He is remembered as the architect of modern India, and his birthday, November 14, is celebrated as Children's Day in India.
